Sig-Sauer have released news of their new adaptive submachine gun platform – the SIG MPX.  Note; I’m calling it “adaptive” because in much the same way as the Bushmaster ACR, the MPX user can quickly change barrel length, calibre, and stock configuration.

But the innovations don’t stop there.  Unlike most submachine guns, the MPX is not blowback operated – it uses Sig’s short-stroke gas system coupled with a rotating-bolt system that fires from a fully closed and locked position.  The MPX also features a monolithic rail upper and rails at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions on the foregrip – and AR-style controls for added user-friendliness.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the weapon is that it is being offered out-of-the-gates in 9mm, .40 and .357 caliber.  When’s the last time you saw a sub-gun from any manufacturer chambered in .357?  And with the MPX you can quickly and easily swap between the different calibers if you need / want to.

The MPX will be offered in a civilian-legal long-barrel carbine model, a military and law enforcement SMG model, and a restricted “short-barrel rifle” (SBR) version.  It is being officially launched at the 2013 SHOT Show.
