The HK G8 was a specialized variant of the HK11E light machine gun which was optimized to provide semi- and full-auto direct fire support for small special operations teams.

Chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, combined the precision of a rifle with the firepower of an automatic weapon – filling that so-called ‘light support weapon’ or ‘light automatic rifle’ slot between an assault rifle and a light machine gun. As such, it was specifically tailored to offer a rapid-fire rifle that was lighter and more precise than traditional belt-fed machine guns. It went on to be used by special federal German police units like GSG9 and others, as well as the land and maritime special operations forces of the German Bundeswehr.
