If you’re from the Great White North like I am, you’ll be well acquainted with the term “white-out”. Thanks to operations in Iraq and Afghanistan we’ve all become familiar with another term, “brown-out”.”Brown-out” occurs when a landing helicopter kicks up so much dust and sand that the pilot loses visual reference with the ground and the horizon in the final critical metres and feet of his or her approach – a deadly, if not potential catostrophic occurence.Now, scientists at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), together with industry partners have showcased new technology that will help pilots overcome this problem.Click here to read the full story from the UK Ministry of Defence.
